On September 6, 2024, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre in Bharivaisi, Campierganj Range of the Gorakhpur Forest Division. This pioneering facility is the world’s first dedicated conservation and breeding center for the Asian King Vulture, also known as the red-headed vulture.
A Unique Effort in Vulture Conservation
While several Jatayu conservation centers in India focus on various vulture species, this new center is unique in its exclusive commitment to the Asian King Vulture. The initiative reflects the urgent need to protect this critically endangered species and reinforces Uttar Pradesh’s dedication to biodiversity conservation.
Strategic Collaboration and Location
The Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre was developed through a collaboration between the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and the Bombay Natural History Society, a prominent organization in wildlife research and conservation. Located in Maharajganj within the Gorakhpur Forest Division, the center is strategically placed in a region known for its rich and diverse ecosystem. This location is ideal for the conservation efforts due to its suitability for vulture habitation and its proximity to natural habitats where vultures thrive.
Commitment to Biodiversity
The center aims to provide a safe haven for the red-headed vulture, allowing for controlled breeding and release programs to help rebuild the dwindling population. It also plans to conduct research, raise awareness, and promote vulture conservation practices among local communities and stakeholders. This groundbreaking initiative underscores the importance of preserving biodiversity and marks a significant step forward in global conservation efforts.
