The Vanghat Experience: Exploring Tiger Country on Foot

August 21, 2024

Located in the buffer zone of the iconic Corbett Tiger Reserve, this journey emphasizes a holistic wilderness experience rather than just sightings of large mammals, although such encounters are possible. Accessible only on foot, your adventure begins near Marchula at the Ramganga River. After crossing a pedestrian suspension bridge, you’ll traverse a charming village along a 2.5-kilometer trail to the riverfront, where a makeshift raft of inflated car tire tubes and bamboo will ferry you across. The lodge, with its four mud cottages and five stone cottages, blends seamlessly into the forest, offering a rustic yet comfortable stay. Birdwatchers will be in paradise, with the semi-open dining area doubling as a bird hide, where you can spot species like the Red-billed Leiothrix, Red-billed Blue Magpie, and White-crested Laughingthrush. Trails of varying difficulty levels provide ample opportunities for further exploration, guided by local experts who reveal the secrets of the forest, from insects and butterflies to reptiles and mammals.
