Sikkim introduces tourist entry fees to promote sustainable travel

March 17, 2025

In a move to regulate tourism and support sustainable development, Sikkim has announced it will begin charging an entry fee for tourists. The new regulation aims to manage growing tourist footfall while generating funds for local infrastructure and environmental conservation. While the fee structure and implementation date are yet to be finalised, officials say the initiative will ensure better crowd control, promote responsible travel, and enhance visitor experiences. Exemptions may be made for specific categories, including children and locals. This policy aligns with similar measures adopted by other eco-sensitive destinations globally, reflecting Sikkim’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with ecological well-being and community benefit.
