The Maharashtra Tourism Department has introduced a fleet of 20 electric buses to improve tourist transportation to the famous Ajanta Caves. Some of these buses are air-conditioned and offer modern facilities, with seating capacities ranging from 14 to 22 passengers. The entire fleet is expected to be fully operational by October 20. Designed to enhance the experience of both domestic and international visitors, these buses will shuttle tourists from the parking area to the Ajanta Caves.
Previously, diesel buses served this route, often causing long waiting times for tourists due to their limited availability. With the new electric buses, the process will become more efficient and eco-friendly. Additionally, passengers will be able to enjoy a short film detailing the rich history of the Ajanta Caves during their ride. To further improve convenience, the tourism department plans to launch a tourist-friendly booking system soon, streamlining the ticket reservation process.
The Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are about 100 kilometers from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). This iconic site, one of India’s most celebrated heritage locations, comprises 30 rock-cut caves, many of which are adorned with intricate paintings that illustrate the life of Lord Buddha and the Jataka Tales.
For travelers, the nearest airport is Aurangabad, around 99 kilometers away, with regular flights from Mumbai and Pune. The closest railway stations are Jalna, 60 kilometers away, and Aurangabad, 100 kilometers from the caves. There are also bus services from nearby cities, and once at the site, visitors can use the new electric buses to reach the cave complex from the parking lot.
