The Limestone Cave-II at Baratang Island was inaugurated on September 21 by Shri Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, A&N Islands. The event was attended by senior officers and staff from the Baratang Forest Division. This new cave, located just 550 meters from the already popular Limestone Cave-I, is expected to enhance Baratang’s growing reputation as an ecotourism hotspot.
Limestone caves, such as those in Baratang, are formed naturally over millions of years by the slow dissolution of limestone rock. These caves are adorned with stunning calcium carbonate formations, called speleothems, which make them a fascinating attraction for eco-conscious tourists. The existing Limestone Cave-I has long been a key draw for visitors due to its unique and beautiful geological features.
What makes Baratang’s limestone caves even more special is the scenic journey to reach them. Visitors are treated to a tranquil boat ride through creeks lined with mangroves, allowing them to immerse themselves in the pristine natural beauty of the island before arriving at the caves. The opening of Limestone Cave-II offers tourists another reason to explore the island’s ecological wonders.
In addition to promoting tourism, Limestone Cave-II is expected to generate green employment opportunities for the local population. With more tourists flocking to Baratang, locals will have increased access to sustainable livelihoods through jobs related to tourism and conservation. This initiative is part of broader efforts to balance environmental protection with economic development, ensuring that Baratang remains an ecotourism gem while benefiting its inhabitants.
