On September 1, IndiGo Airlines launched a daily turboprop ATR72 service (6E1177/6E1178) connecting Chennai and Jaffna, Sri Lanka. This new route complements the existing daily service by Alliance Air (9I101/9I102), which began in October 2019. Jaffna becomes IndiGo’s second destination in Sri Lanka after Colombo. The new service aims to cater to the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora traveling from the UAE, and attract tourists interested in the ‘Ramayana circuit,’ which includes Jaffna, Trincomalee, Kandy, and Colombo. The route also holds potential for trade and medical tourism, bolstered by the India-Sri Lanka air services agreement. For travel assistance, passengers can contact Acorn Aviation, IndiGo’s general sales agent in Sri Lanka. IndiGo is also expanding its network with new flights to Southeast Asia.
