India Set to Welcome New Airlines in 2025, Boosting Competition and Connectivity

February 17, 2025

India’s aviation sector is poised for significant expansion in 2025 with the introduction of three new airlines: Shankh Air, Air Kerala, and Alhind Air. These carriers are in the final stages of securing regulatory approvals and are set to enhance both domestic and international connectivity.
Based in Lucknow, Shankh Air plans to commence operations by May 2025, pending its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline intends to launch with five Airbus A320-200 aircraft, expanding its fleet by ten additional aircraft in 2026.
Air Kerala, based in Kochi, is set to launch in mid-2025. Initial operations will utilize ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft, with plans to transition to narrow-body jets for international routes, starting with destinations like Dubai by 2026. The airline has received operational permits from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and is awaiting final AOC approval from the DGCA.
Kozhikode-based Alhind Air is preparing for a mid-2025 launch. Promoted by the Alhind Group, the airline will begin with ATR 72-600 aircraft, focusing on intrastate connectivity within Kerala before expanding to other domestic destinations. Plans include connecting 40 domestic airports and, within 18 months of launch, initiating services to the Gulf region to serve Kerala’s expatriate population. Alhind Air received initial DGCA approval in August 2024 and anticipates securing its AOC by mid-2025.
The entry of these airlines is expected to provide passengers with more travel options and stimulate economic growth in their respective regions.
