Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is set to fully operationalize its expanded Terminal 1 (T1) on April 15, 2025. This development will lead to the temporary closure of Terminal 2 (T2) for refurbishment.
T1’s expansion, completed under the Phase 3A project, has increased its area from 55,740 square meters to 206,950 square meters, integrating arrival and departure terminals under one roof. The upgraded terminal now features 100 check-in counters, including 36 Self Baggage Drop kiosks, 108 Common Usage Self-Service kiosks, and 20 Automated Tray Retrieval Systems for smoother security checks. Additionally, the baggage handling capacity has been enhanced from 3,240 to 6,000 bags per hour.
With T1’s full reopening, all domestic flights currently operating from T2, primarily those of IndiGo and Akasa Air, will transition to T1. T2, which manages approximately 270-280 daily air traffic movements and serves over 46,000 passengers, will be temporarily closed for four to six months for refurbishment, with completion anticipated in the September quarter.
This expansion positions IGIA as the only airport in India capable of handling over 100 million passengers annually, with T1 alone accommodating up to 40 million passengers per year.
Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight information and terminal details during this transition period to ensure a smooth travel experience.
