Buddha Poornima and Vesak Poya in Sri lanka or Vesak in Bhutan ( 12 May)

April 14, 2025

Buddha Purnima in India and Vesak in Sri Lanka and Bhutan commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha. In India, sacred sites like Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar draw pilgrims for prayer, meditation, and acts of kindness. Sri Lanka glows with colourful lanterns, vibrant pandals illustrating Jataka tales, and widespread almsgiving as symbols of compassion. In Bhutan, the day is marked with solemn rituals, butter-lamp offerings, and spiritual reflection in monasteries. These celebrations honour the timeless teachings of the Buddha — of peace, non-violence, and self-realisation — and offer a moment to turn inward, reconnect with purpose, and walk gently in pursuit of inner truth. It’s a festival of light, both literal and deeply symbolic.
