Sikkim Unlocks Adventure: Decentralized Permits to Drive Tourism and Local Growth

September 26, 2024

Sikkim has introduced a significant change in its tourism sector by decentralizing the Protected Area Permit (PAP) system. The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, has implemented this initiative to simplify access to key tourist spots, such as Nathula Pass and Tsomgo Lake, while promoting balanced tourism in the Namchi and Soreng Districts.

Starting September 24, 2024, the new policy will enable tourists to obtain permits for 50 vehicles per day to Nathula Pass through designated tourism offices across the state. This change aims to minimize the bureaucratic hurdles faced by both domestic and international travelers, making it easier to explore these scenic areas. The initiative is designed to attract more visitors by streamlining the permit process, fostering a deeper appreciation for Sikkim’s natural and cultural heritage.

One of the most appealing aspects of the new policy is the introduction of free Nathula Pass permits for domestic tourists who stay at least one night in registered hotels or homestays in the Namchi and Soreng Districts. To qualify, tourists must provide a valid hotel or homestay bill and submit necessary documents through a local registered travel agency at least three days before their intended visit. This policy not only encourages longer stays but also promotes engagement with local businesses, supporting the local economy.

By decentralizing the permit system, Sikkim aims to boost its tourism sector and strengthen the local economy, creating a win-win situation for both tourists and local communities.
