IndiGo Airlines is expected to commence flight operations from Pakyong Airport in Sikkim starting from October, according to airport director Sanjeev Kumar Singh. The airline is currently evaluating commercial viability and data analysis in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India. IndiGo plans to operate flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, which will significantly enhance tourism in Sikkim. Additionally, Nepal’s Buddha Air is interested in launching daily flights from Kathmandu to Pakyong, pending approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Talks are also ongoing with Blade Air and Jetwing to initiate services from the airport this year, aiming to further boost connectivity and accessibility to the region.
The carrier is also gearing up to launch flight operations on the Puducherry-Hyderabad and Puducherry-Bengaluru routes in mid-November. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved the airline’s operations from October 27 to March 30 for the winter schedule, according to Puducherry Airport Director K. Rajasekhar Reddy. IndiGo representatives visited the area recently to finalize agreements with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The airline plans to operate ATR-72 aircraft for these short-haul routes. The AAI has provided necessary facilities, including ground support equipment space and ticket counters. After delays since July due to aircraft availability, IndiGo’s entry is expected to revive connectivity and boost local tourism in Puducherry.
