Suspension of Sri Lanka’s eVisa system

August 22, 2024

Travellers planning to visit Sri Lanka should be aware that the eVisa facility has been suspended. On August 2, the Supreme Court issued an interim order halting the online visa portal managed by IVS-GBS and VFS Global. The previous Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, operated by Mobitel, will be reinstated. This change affects nationals from 167 countries, allowing entry through 30 international airports and six major seaports for up to 60 days with double entry. The eVisa system was introduced on April 17, 2024, but faced controversy and protests, leading to the Supreme Court’s suspension order. Meanwhile, the ETA system is expected to be operational soon, and visa-on-arrival remains an option.
