Kolkata Airport to Soar as a Global Aviation Hub

December 24, 2024

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is set for a major transformation, aiming to connect with 100 destinations daily. Announced during the airport’s centenary celebrations, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu outlined ambitious plans to expand both domestic and international flight operations.

Currently serving 15 international and 49 domestic destinations, the airport’s daily aircraft movements are expected to increase from 264 to 400. To support this growth, a new terminal, scheduled for completion by November 2025, will raise the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 26 million to 40 million.

Highlighting Kolkata’s rich aviation legacy, Minister Naidu recalled its historic direct flights to global destinations like London and Paris, emphasizing efforts to reclaim its international prominence. This initiative is part of the government’s broader focus on enhancing aviation infrastructure to meet the growing demand for air travel in India.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the centenary celebrations also marked the opening of a trial ‘Uran Cafe,’ aimed at elevating passenger experience. These developments reinforce Kolkata Airport’s role as a key player in India’s aviation sector and a gateway to eastern India and beyond.

This bold expansion signals a promising future for the region’s connectivity and economic growth.
